This is a valid question. Many people, even if they believe in a god, believe that this being created the universe and is just sitting back not really involved, much less communicating. In other words, we are that god's soap opera starring a cast of billions.
However, when we examine the Bible, we learn that God takes a personal interest in His creation. More than just watching us, God has communicated with mankind. You ask, "Why would God communicate with us?" The answer is simple. God communicates with us because of His very nature. God's nature or character requires Him to communicate with His creation.
God's nature that causes Him to communicate with His creation is:
HIS JUSTICE. "Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you, and therefore He waits on high to have compassion on you. For the Lord is a God of Justice; how blessed are all those who long for Him" (Isaiah 30:18).
Consider, "But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation" (Romans 2:5-7).
For God to judge us according to a standard of behavior, He must tell us what that standard is. Failure to tell us what He requires and then hold us accountable would be a great crime.
HIS LOVE. "The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love" (I John 4:8).
"...God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth" (I Timothy 2:3b-4). Clearly our heavenly Father wants us to know the truth. Therefore, He would not leave us in the dark to guess at what the truth is.
God would not be love if He refused to communicate. Therefore, God must tell mankind what He requires of us.
God's holiness, righteousness, faithfulness, mercy all require Him to communicate. Our Father's entire being requires Him to communicate with His created beings.
Blessings,
